| Day
3-6. |
Leaving
Macas after breakfast, we head to the river (a
short 10 minutes out of town) and secure our
equipment in the rafts. For the next 4 days we
travel through the Amazon jungle as silent
spectators of the life around us. Unlike many
rainforest trips that use motorized canoes,
we will be using the river current and our
paddles to propel us downstream, thus creating
much less of a disruption in the natural
environment. The river provides added
entertainment as we negotiate the many exciting
whitewater rapids. Leaving Macas, the river is
wide and peaceful, providing many small class II
- III rapids to get us ready for the more
difficult whitewater below. In this area we are
most likely to encounter the local residents
(Shuar Indians) as they wash clothes, pan for
gold, etc. After crossing under the Patuca
bridge, the banks of the river become towering
canyon walls, and the water is channeled into a
narrow boulder choked-gorge. This section
provides us with two days of clase IV - V rapids
and awestruck gazing at spectacular virgin
jungle. Waterfalls cascade from the cliffs high
above, providing an incredible backdrop for
photos and a beautiful hiking opportunities. We
reach the take-out in the early afternoon of day
6, pack our gear and drive four hours through the
countryside back to Macas, where showers and a
warm bed await. From the road, we catch glimpses
of the river that has been our home for the
previous four days. |
