Puerto Lopez is a small, laid-back fishing village, which has still kept its autentic charme. In the afternoon you can watch the fishermen leaving the port with their small boats and in the morning see them coming back unloading their catch.
There are some restaurants selling fabulous seafood and hotels close to the long beach and it is a nice place to relax.
A few kilometres offshore you find La Isla de la Plata, which is also named “Galapagos for the poor”. You can find some species that also inhabit the Galapagos like the blue and red-footed boobie, frigatebirds, albatros, pelicans and other seabirds that are nesting in colonies. The island is surrounded by coral reef and snorkelling is quite nice. On the boat-ride from Puerto Lopex to the islands you can often see dolfins.
Whale watching is popular during mid-June and October and can be booked in town. At this time of year the huge humpback whales are mating and the chance to observe these impressive giants is pretty high.
Near Puerto Lopez is the Machallila National Park with the beautiful beaches Los Frailes. The deserted, white beaches are amongst the prettiest of Ecuador.
