Otavalo is famous for its colourful and bustling market where you can buy crafts like weavings, ceramics, traditional clothes, hammocks, paintings, jewellery and leatherworks.
This is the place to stock up with cheap souvenirs, bargaining is a must!! The indigenous Otavaleños wear their beautiful and unique clothes that make them distinguish from other groups. They are very friendly and outgoing.
The Otavaleños sell their goods every day but the biggest and most famous market is on Saturdays. This is when tourists flock ito the small city. During the week it is rather quiet. There are several hotels in colonial buildings and a bunch of restaurants.
The market already existed before Inca times. At another market locals buy and sell food and animals.
